1ST NATIONAL EFL AND ELT USTA TUNJA CONGRESS: BILINGUALISM AND NEW TRENDS

 

 “English, the window to the world” 
 
The Languages institute “Bernardo de Lugo, O.P.” is pleased to invite you to participate in its first national EFL and ELT USTA Tunja Congress, presenting proposals related to research studies, workshops or posters in English. This event is going to be held on April 4th 2018 at Santo Tomás University in Tunja. 
 
This academic congress brings opportunities to reflect about the current EFL and ELT practices of the Colombian schools and universities to English teachers, department directors, students, and in general, active participants of the academic community. Besides, participants create academic spaces to share about meaningful experiences in the field of teaching and learning English. 
 
 
 
We invite students, teachers, researchers and academic community to participate with your proposals about the following topics: 
 
1.) Bilingualism as an educational trend: This line of research deals with implications and trends of bilingual education in Colombia or foreign contexts, bearing in mind entire subjects, bilingual classes and the way in which curriculum is connected through elementary, intermediate and advance level of English. 
 
2.) Virtually and technology in teaching and learning English: This line of research is based on the new learning and teaching methodologies which have been implemented by English teachers as tools to complement face to face classes. 
 
3.) Meaningful pedagogical practices in the teachers of foreign languages work in the globalized world: This line of research is proposed to socialize pedagogical research practices that evidence the teachers’ classroom experiences and procedures according to the context as well as the national and international trends. 
 
4.) Literature, culture and problem solving as interdisciplinary factors: This line of research deals with the inclusion of literature as an interdisciplinary factor in English teaching as a way to explore people’s culture, behavior, experiences, and problems.  
 
 
 
Lecture
The lecture contains theory or practice about the presenters’ work; it can be in process or finished. The audience can do question at the end in order to clarify aspects or have extra information about the topic.

Workshop
The workshop is carried out by the presenter and developed with the audience.  It is focused on teaching techniques or academic activities. The presenter organizes, applies and guides the workshop.

Research report
Ongoing research contains problem, main objective, theoretical support, impact or expected results and so forth.   Research results include the previous aspects plus finding.

Reflection
The reflection involves analysis on specific topics related to the teaching and learning practices, the presenters can highlight theories, academic discussions, criticism, and problems, among others.

Poster
Posters show research procedures or academic experience in English teaching and learning fields; they present key information that permits the public have a picture of the academic practices.

Doctor in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching 
University of Arizona
Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas teacher and researcher 
 
Carmen Helena Guerrero Nieto holds a Ph.D from the University of Arizona. She is currently affiliated to the Ph.D program in Education, Mayor in ELT Education from the Universidad Distrital. She has published books and articles in the field of critical pedagogy, critical discourse analysis, and teacher education. She is the main researcher of the research group Critical Studies on Educational Policies, and currently the vice-president of the Colombian English Teacher Association ASOCOPI.
 
 
LEOPOLDO PINZÓN
 
Leopoldo Pinzon Is the Director of the languages institute of Santo Tomás university, during his 15 years in the field, Leo has worked in other languages centers as an international oral examiner of Cambridge assessment and he is a member of the ICFES national technical committee for English tests, a syllabus designer, an evaluation system constructor, an item writer and a host and organizer of two national ELT conferences among other jobs
